My Garage Door Opener Won't Respond — What's Wrong?
A non-responsive opener is rarely a dead motor. Here is the exact order an experienced technician runs through — and most of these you can do yourself.
1. Check the Wall Lock Button
Many wall consoles have a 'lock' or 'vacation' switch that disables remotes. Toggle it off.
2. Power
Check the breaker, then unplug and replug the opener. The light should flicker.
3. Remote Battery
Replace the CR2032 or 9V — even if the LED still lights, voltage may be too low to transmit.
4. Sensors
If safety sensor LEDs aren't both solid, the opener will refuse to operate (or flash 10 times).
5. Logic Board
If the wall button works but no remote does, the receiver board has likely failed. Replaceable for $60–$120 in parts.
6. Drive Gear
Motor hums but nothing moves? The plastic main gear has stripped — extremely common on Genie units past 8 years old.
Sensors and remote batteries solve roughly 60% of 'opener not working' calls.
