What's the Best Lubricant for a Garage Door?
WD-40 is the wrong answer — it's a solvent, not a lubricant, and actually strips existing grease. Here's what to use instead.
Best: White Lithium Grease (Spray)
Sticks well, handles temperature swings, doesn't drip onto your car. Perfect for hinges, rollers (only the bearings, not the wheel face), springs, and end bearings.
Acceptable: Silicone Spray
Quieter on plastic-on-plastic surfaces (rare in garage doors). Doesn't last as long as lithium.
Wrong Answer: WD-40
It's a solvent designed to displace water and existing grease. Using it on your garage door strips lubrication and shortens part life.
Where Not to Apply
Never lubricate the tracks themselves — rollers should roll, not slide. Lubed tracks attract dirt and accelerate wear.
Pick up a $7 can of white lithium grease at any hardware store — it's the only product you need.
